Israel Orders Armored Audi A8

The President of the United States may be the highest target for assassination in the world – hence Cadillac One, his custom, leather-lined tank – but there's no shortage of people in the Middle East who'd bite that the opportunity to take a shot at the Prime Minister of Israel. (The recently commemorated assassination of late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin is evidence enough.) It comes as no surprise that the Shin-Bet – Israel's national domestic preventative security force – has ordered a new armored limousine to transport the country's head of government.

The duties had been carried out until now by a motor pool of American and German vehicles, accompanied by Japanese SUVs in leapfrog formation (it's a wonder to behold if you're ever seen them in motion), but will soon be taken over by a specially-commissioned Audi A8 Security.

The car is reportedly based on the Audi A8 (likely the long-wheelbase version) with the 450-horsepower, 6-liter W-12 engine, Quattro all-wheel drive, B6+ and B7 ballistic protection, run-flat tires, an independent oxygen supply for the cabin, a fire-suppression system, explosive charges to free the doors in case of shockwaves, a DVD entertainment system, drinks fridge and humidor (Netanyahu's a known cigar aficionado). Those, of course, are just the features we know about, and given Israel's leading position in security equipment, we don't doubt there's plenty more that remains undisclosed. The car is said to cost around $700K from the factory, but add the country's incredibly high taxes – which the government still has to pay, but not on the security equipment – and you're looking at a cool million.

Hyundai Equus 2011 Specification Review

Hyundai has already shown us its GoGoGear Racing Genesis Coupe and a Rhys Millen Racing Equus. Now we get two more looks at what they're bringing to SEMA this week. Hyundai has teamed up with DUB Magazine and Mummbles Marketing on a pair of Equus sedans.

The DUB Equus shows surprising restraint. While it wears 24-inch wheels, they blend in nicely with the body kit. Likewise, the grey-black paint scheme is sinister without being SEMA-shouty. Dare we say it? This is one SEMA ride we wouldn't mind spending some seat time with.

Mummbles Marketing, a new custom shop of out Harrisburg, PA, has turned the standard Equus into a luxo-custom it calls the "Elegant Equus." Mummbles didn't just focus on looks, however; some wrenching was done on the Equus' V8 engine, too. Thanks to a turbo kit from Legacy Innovations, a nitrous system and a Magnaflow exhaust, the Elegant Equus now produces 450 horsepower. Mummbles also adds an extra iPad (over the stock tablet the Equus comes with) that controls the air suspension, rear curtains, stereo and windows.

BMW Recall Car Because Sometimes Fail In Fuel Pumps

BMW poised to recall hundreds of thousands of direct-injection turbocharged cars because of high-pressure fuel pump problems. Apparently as a result of an impending story from ABC News (according to ABC—BMW's press department wasn't picking up the phone this morning), BMW is about to upgrade a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) to a full-out recall of several hundred thousand cars.

From the beginning: Starting in 2006, BMW sold several different models equipped with the N54 twin-turbocharged engine, including 135, 335, 535, Z4 and X6 vehicles. This engine is a direct-injection engine. It sprays gasoline directly into the combustion chamber at many thousands of psi of pressure, while most conventional fuel-injected engines spray into the intake tract at pressures between 50 and 100 psi. This requires an expensive high-pressure metering pump, in addition to the conventional pump mounted inside the fuel tank. Some of these pumps have been failing, and when they do, one of several things can happen: the vehicle can stop outright, making for a dangerous situation if you're driving in heavy traffic and can't coast to the shoulder safely. The vehicle can experience poor performance and a severe drop in power, which at least should let the driver negotiate the vehicle to a safe place if not to the dealer for repairs. A less severe failure can make the vehicle go into a "limp-home" mode, with slightly reduced power, accompanied by a check engine light on the dashboard.

As far back as 2008, BMW issued a TSB to its dealers authorizing them to replace the high-pressure pump under warranty, but only if it failed or showed symptoms of partial failure. According to ABC, BMW will shortly be recalling all of the affected vehicles to replace these pumps, whether they show any signs of failure or not. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had an official investigation into this matter in 2008, which they quietly dropped, citing that they didn't feel any defect was a safety issue.

Under the hood, with the exception of the 200HP 2.0-liter TSI unit, it's more about fuel-efficiency than gung-ho performances. The 1.6 TDI four-pot, capable of 105 hp (77 kW), will certainly get most of the attention in Europe, given that it only needs 4.2 liters of fuel per every 100 kilometers (56 mpg US). The second diesel option is the 2-liter 140 hp (103 kW) variant.

On the petrol front, the 2.0 TSI is joined by a 1.2 TSI engine (105 hp) and a 1.4 TSI, the latter delivering 122 (90 kW) or 160 hp (118 kW).

Aside from the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 and RedLine Charger, and Fiat 500 that we've already told you about in previous posts, it's worth mentioning that Mopar is reading a luxed-up version of the 2011 Dodge Durango called "Black and Tan" as well as an "Off-Road Edition" of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee.

New Jetta Launches in Europe

After the USA , Europe is also getting the new Volkswagen Jetta sedan, with prices starting from €20,900, equal (but not comparable due to different taxation policies etc) to US$28,984 with the current exchange rates.

Even though the Jetta is the best-selling European car in the U.S. with up to 110,000 examples sold annually, the compact sedan's predecessors haven't really enjoyed the same success across the pond. However, the German automaker hopes that the new generation of the model will prove more appealing to European buyers.

"Never before has a Jetta had this much sports appeal, this much fuel efficiency or this large a size," Volkswagen says in the press release.

We don't know about the visual appeal, but measuring 4.64 m (182.6 inches) in length, the new Jetta is indeed longer than its predecessor 4.55 meters or 179.1 inches). The added length results in a 6.7 cm (2.64 inches) gain in legroom.

Remember back in 1975 when Chevy tried to tell us they wouldn't be producing Corvette convertibles anymore? Well, it came back in 1986.

All 1986 Chevrolet Corvette convertibles were Indianapolis Pace Car Replicas and came with a decal package which could be affixed by the dealer. Of 35,109 Corvettes sold in 1986, 7,315 were these pace car convertibles.

Anti-lock brakes, advanced lighting, and a key code anti-theft system were made standard in the 1986 model year. The engine remained the same as in 1985, a 5.7-liter L98 rated at 230 horsepower. The 4+3 manual transmission was still available.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro Z28, Car Muscle

One lucky forum member over at Camaro5 has grabbed some shots of what appear to be a pair of 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 models out testing. Oddly, they're wearing Indy 500 pace car stickers.

The new shots reveal little we haven't already seen in our own spy shots of the Z28, but the Indy 500 twist adds some interest to the possible timing of the car's debut. If they are being geared up to run as the pace car for Indy, they'll be staged for a public appearance by the 2011 Memorial Day weekend, which means sometime before May 30 of next year.

The 2012 Camaro Z28 is expected to get a 556-horsepower punch from the same engine found in Cadillac's CTS-V line, the supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V-8.
